The Sensation Boxelder Maple (Acer negundo 'Sensation') is a cultivated male shade tree known for its seedless growth, improved branch structure, and brilliant autumn color.
- Size: Reaches about 30 to 35 feet tall and 20 to 25 feet wide with a rounded or pyramidal crown.
- Foliage: Emerges in spring with copper-red or bronze-orange tones, transitions to a medium green in summer, and turns a vibrant scarlet-red in fall.
- Seedless & Pest-Resistant: As a male clone introduced by J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co., it does not produce seed pods ("helicopters"), which helps keep annoying boxelder bugs away.
- Origin: Discovered near an Idaho homestead by Warren Carnefix of Fruitland Nursery.
Growing Conditions
- Hardiness Zones: Generally hardy in USDA zones 3 through 6 (or up to zone 9 depending on regional microclimates).
- Soil & Water: Adaptable to various conditions, tolerating both wet and dry soils, drought, and high-pH or urban environments.
- Sunlight: Performs best in full sun.
- Care: Fast-to-moderate growth rate that benefits from early structural pruning while young.
