Sester's Dwarf Blue Spruce (Picea pungens 'Sester Dwarf') is a compact, slow-growing evergreen conifer known for its striking silvery-blue needles and classically symmetrical, pyramidal form. Discovered by Sester Farms in Oregon, it offers the iconic look of a Colorado Blue Spruce at roughly one-quarter the growth rate of its full-sized parent, making it ideal for smaller modern landscapes, foundation plantings, and rock gardens.
- Mature Size: Typically reaches 6 to 10 feet tall with a spread of 3 to 5 feet at the base.
- Growth Rate: Very slow, averaging only 3 to 6 inches per year. It takes about 10 years to reach 3 feet tall.
- Hardiness Zones: Highly cold-tolerant, thriving in USDA Zones 2 through 7.
- Lifespan: Can live for 40+ years under ideal growing conditions.
- Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) to maintain its bright blue foliage density.
- Soil & Moisture: Prefers average, well-drained soil. While it adapts to a variety of soil types and pH levels, it will not tolerate standing water or soggy roots.
- Watering: Needs regular watering until established; once mature, it is notably drought-tolerant and excellent for xeriscaping.
- Maintenance: Virtually maintenance-free. It naturally retains its neat, conical shape and requires minimal to no pruning.
- Resistances: It is highly resistant to deer, urban pollution, environmental salt, and common fungal issues like powdery mildew.
