Russian Sage (Salvia yangii, formerly Perovskia atriplicifolia) is a tough, low-maintenance herbaceous perennial and subshrub prized for its airy spikes of lavender-blue flowers and aromatic, silvery-gray foliage.
- Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 4 through 9
- Size: Typically reaches 2 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide
- Bloom Time: Midsummer through fall (often lasting until late October)
- Light: Absolute full sun (minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight)
- Water Needs: Highly drought-tolerant once established; requires well-draining soil and is sensitive to wet or soggy winter conditions.
- Pruning: Cut the plant back to about 6 to 12 inches in early spring before new growth starts.
- Soil: Prefers lean, sandy, or rocky, well-drained soils. Avoid rich soils or heavy fertilizers, which cause the stems to become weak and flop over.
- Resistances: Exceptionally resistant to deer, rabbits, and drought, making it a favorite for xeriscapes and water-wise garden borders.
