Erianthus ravennae (commonly known as Ravenna grass, hardy pampas grass, or plume grass) is a massive, dramatic ornamental perennial grass that serves as a cold-hardy alternative to true pampas grass.
Size: Grows in large clumps reaching 9 to 12 feet tall (sometimes up to 14 feet with plumes) and 4 to 6 feet wide.
Foliage: Broad, gray-green leaf blades featuring a white stripe down the center. Foliage turns vibrant shades of bronze, orange, and red in autumn.
Plumes: Feathery, purplish-bronze flower panicles emerge in late summer, fading to silver-gray and white as autumn progresses, lasting well into winter.
Thrives in USDA Zones 5 through 10.
Landscape Use: Excellent as a tall vertical accent, privacy screen, or dramatic focal point in large gardens.
Invasiveness: Erianthus ravennae (now scientifically classified by some authorities as Tripidium ravennae) can self-seed aggressively and has become established as an invasive weed in certain riparian and moist habitats across parts of North America, including California and the Southwest. Check local extension guidelines before planting.
