New Harmony American Elm Tree (Ulmus americana 'New Harmony') is a vigorous, vase-shaped shade tree developed and released by the U.S. National Arboretum in 1995 to feature high tolerance to Dutch elm disease (DED).
Mature Size: Grows 50 to 70 feet tall with a 50-foot spread (slightly narrower crown than classic elms or the Valley Forge cultivar).
Form: Graceful, upright, broadly vase-shaped canopy with arching, slender, and slightly drooping branches.
Foliage & Fall Color: Medium-to-dark green leaves in the summer that transition to a vibrant yellow in the autumn.
Growth Rate: Fast-growing under ideal conditions.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 5 through 9.
Disease Resistance: High tolerance levels to Dutch elm disease (tested successfully with high survival rates in the U.S. National Elm Trial), though not entirely immune.
Urban Adaptability: Highly tolerant of air pollution, urban streetscapes, deicing salts, and a wide range of soil pH levels.
Soil & Moisture: Prefers well-drained soil in full sun, but adapts well to heavy clay and temporary standing water or dry drought conditions.
