The narrowleaf cottonwood (Populus angustifolia) is a fast-growing, medium-to-large deciduous tree native to western North America's riparian zones.

Size: Grows 45 to 60 feet tall with a narrow, conical or columnar crown spanning 30 to 45 feet wide.
Leaves: Long, narrow, and willow-like (1–3 inches long), yellow-green in summer, turning bright golden-yellow in autumn.
Bark: Smooth and gray-yellow on upper branches, becoming rough and furrowed on the lower trunk with age.
Flowers: Produces fuzzy cylindrical catkins in early spring that release cottony seeds.
Thrives along streams, creeks, and natural waterways at elevations between 3,900 and 7,900 feet.
Sun/Water: Requires full sun and consistent, abundant moisture; it is not drought-tolerant.
Roots: Possesses an aggressive root system useful for erosion control, though it can damage underground pipes or foundations if planted too close to structures.
Ecosystem: Provides vital food and habitat for native birds, pollinators, and beavers.
Historical: Gummy spring buds were historically chewed as a form of gum by Indigenous peoples like the Apache and Navajo.
Landscape: Excellent for large properties, windbreaks, and ecological restoration projects.
Hardiness: Zones 3-8
