Height & Spread: Grows 2 to 5 feet tall and spreads 4 to 8 feet wide by forming colonies via root suckers.
Flowers: Tiny, bell-shaped, greenish-white or pinkish flowers bloom in the late spring to mid-summer.
Berries: Produces clusters of vibrant coral-pink to purple-red berries in the fall that persist through the winter.
Hardiness: Thrives in USDA zones 2 through 8.
Prefers full sun to partial shade, though it tolerates deep shade.
Soil: Highly adaptable to various soils including sand, clay, and rocky ground, but prefers average, well-drained moisture.
Uses: Excellent for erosion control on slopes, woodland gardens, and naturalized borders.
Provides crucial winter food for songbirds and small mammals, while the summer flowers attract pollinators.
Toxicity: Despite the name "currant," the berries are not recommended for human consumption because they contain saponins that can cause stomach upset in large quantities. They can also be toxic to pets.
