Kobold Liatris (Liatris spicata 'Kobold', also known as Gayfeather or Dense Blazing Star) is a compact, clump-forming herbaceous perennial valued for its upright spikes of rosy-lavender flowers.
- Size: Grows 18 to 30 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide (shorter and sturdier than wild types, meaning it does not require staking).
- Flowers: Fluffy, deep rosy-purple flower wands open from the top down during summer (typically July to August).
- Foliage: Grass-like, narrow green leaves that form a neat basal clump.
- Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 3 to 9.
- Light: Full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight).
- Soil: Average, medium, well-drained soil; tolerates clay, sand, or rocky conditions, and handles moisture better than many other Liatris species (though it dislikes winter wetness).
- Water: Average water needs; drought-tolerant once established.
Garden Uses & Wildlife
- Pollinators: Heavily attracts butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects.
- Resistance: Deer-resistant and rabbit-resistant.
- Arrangements: Makes an outstanding, long-lasting cut flower for fresh bouquets.
