Denver Gold Columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha 'Denver Gold') is a long-lived, vigorous perennial selected by Plant Select for its large, bright yellow flowers and adaptability.
- Flowers: Produces brilliant canary-yellow, long-spurred blooms measuring over 3 inches across.
- Bloom Time: Blooms heavily from late spring (May–June) into mid-to-late summer, and can rebloom if deadheaded.
- Plant Size: Grows to a height of 28 to 36 inches with a spread of about 15 to 18 inches over blue-green, fern-like foliage.
- Hardiness: Winter hardy to USDA Zone 3 (growing well up to elevations of 9,000 feet).
- Wildlife & Resistance: Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, while the bitter foliage makes it resistant to deer and rabbits.
Cultivation Tips
- Light: Thrives in full sun in cooler climates or partial/light shade in warmer regions.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil (adapts to clay, loam, or sandy mixes) and tolerates dry shade once established.
- Maintenance: Cut back spent flower stems to encourage repeat blooming, or let them go to seed to self-sow true-to-type plants in the garden.
