Schizachyrium scoparium, commonly known as little bluestem, is a North American native perennial bunchgrass valued for its fine-textured blue-green summer foliage, striking mahogany-red fall color, and exceptional winter interest.
Height & Spread: Grows upright in dense clumps about 2 to 3 feet tall (flower stems can reach up to 5 feet) and roughly 1.5 to 2 feet wide.
Sun Exposure: Thrives best in full sun.
Soil Requirements: Prefers dry to medium-moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates poor soil, clay, sand, and high heat, but dislikes constantly wet roots.
Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9.
Wildlife Value: Serves as a larval host for native skipper butterflies and provides food and cover for birds and small mammals.
Drought Tolerance: Develops deep roots that make it highly drought-tolerant once established and useful for erosion control.
Care: Requires minimal maintenance; just cut it back to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
