Fern Leaf Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula 'Ron Williams') is a tough, narrow, columnar deciduous shrub prized for its fine, feathery foliage and tight vertical shape.
Size: Grows 5 to 9 feet tall and only 2 to 3 feet wide.
Foliage: Deeply cut, delicate, dark green leaves that turn vibrant yellow in the fall.
Hardiness: Extremely cold hardy down to -50°F (USDA Zones 2–7).
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast (about 12 to 18 inches per year).
Sunlight: Thrives best in full sun, though it tolerates partial shade.
Soil: Highly adaptable to most soil types and pH levels as long as they are not constantly waterlogged or bone dry.
Maintenance: Very low maintenance; prune dead or rubbing branches in late winter or early spring if needed.
Deer Resistance: Highly resistant to deer browsing.
Ideal for tight screening, property lines, or small urban yards.
Accents: Perfect for framing entryways, doorways, or paths due to its rigid upright form.
Containers: Works very well as a vertical accent in large patio pots.
