Fortune's spindle (scientifically known as Euonymus fortunei and commonly called wintercreeper) is a tough, broadleaf evergreen shrub or climbing vine native to East Asia.
Type: Broadleaf evergreen shrub, trailing ground cover, or climbing vine.
Foliage: Oval, glossy leaves often featuring vibrant variegation with white, cream, or golden-yellow margins (such as the popular cultivar 'Canadale Gold').
Flowers: Inconspicuous, tiny greenish-white flowers that bloom in early summer.
Mature Size: Typically reaches 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide as a mounding shrub, though vining forms can spread much wider or climb significantly higher if supported.
Light: Thrives in full sun to part shade. Brighter light enhances the intensity of yellow variegation on variegated cultivars.
Soil: Highly adaptable to various soils, including clay, provided the ground is well-drained. It dislikes consistently soggy or wet soils.
Water: Moderate water needs; requires regular moisture when newly planted, becoming moderately drought-tolerant once established.
Hardiness: Typically reliable in USDA Zones 4 or 5 through 9, depending on the cultivar and winter exposure.
Popular for foundation plantings, erosion control on slopes, low hedges, or climbing masonry and trellises.
