Dart's Gold Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Dart's Gold') is a highly resilient, compact deciduous flowering shrub prized for its multi-season visual interest. Known for its changing, maple-like foliage and characteristic peeling bark, this North American native cultivar typically matures to 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, borders, and informal hedges.
- Foliage & Color Transitions: Three seasons of color. Leaves emerge a bright golden-yellow in spring, shift to a chartreuse or lime green by mid-summer, and mature to a warm bronze-gold or orange in autumn.
- Flowers & Fruit: In late spring to early summer, flat clusters of small pinkish-white flowers bloom at the ends of branches, which later give way to decorative red seed pods that attract wild birds.
- Winter Bark: Once the leaves drop, mature stems reveal an attractive exfoliating/peeling tan-and-brown bark. This peeling layer texture provides unique structural interest in snowy winters.
- Hardiness Zones: Highly cold-tolerant, thriving reliably in USDA Zones 2 to 7 or 3 to 8 (safely withstanding sub-zero winters down to -40°F).
- Sunlight Preference: Full sun to partial shade. For the most intense, vibrant golden foliage color and dense growth, plant it in a location that receives full sun.
- Soil & Water: Remarkably tough and highly adaptable. It tolerates poor conditions like heavy clay, rocky soil, urban pollution, and temporary drought once its root system is fully established.
- Pruning Needs: Because it flowers on old wood, any structural shaping should be done immediately after blooming in early summer. To keep the shrub vigorous, you can perform renewal pruning in late winter by removing about one-third of the oldest wood straight down to the base.
