Bowles' Common Periwinkle (Vinca minor 'Bowles' or 'Bowles Variety'), also known as creeping myrtle, is a popular, low-maintenance evergreen groundcover.
Key Characteristics
- Botanical Name: Vinca minor 'Bowles'
- Plant Type: Evergreen perennial groundcover
- Height & Spread: Grows 4 to 6 inches tall and spreads up to 1 to 3 feet wide
- Flowers: Larger violet-blue, azure-blue, or deep lilac five-petaled pinwheel-shaped flowers
- Bloom Time: Heavy bloom in mid-to-late spring, with sporadic blooms through summer and fall
- Foliage: Glossy, dark green, oval-to-lance-shaped evergreen leaves with pronounced veining
Growing Conditions & Care
- USDA Hardiness Zones: Zones 4 through 10
- Light Needs: Thrives in partial shade, full shade, or dappled light; can tolerate full sun in cooler northern zones
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter (adaptable to normal, clay, or sandy soils)
- Water: Drought-tolerant once established, but prefers consistent moisture or watering when the top 2 inches of soil are dry
- Maintenance: Low-maintenance; a light pruning in early spring helps encourage fresh growth and a dense mat
- Resilience: Resistant to deer and rabbits, and effective for erosion control on shady slopes or under mature trees
