Blue oat grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens) is a cool-season perennial ornamental bunchgrass prized for its striking, metallic steel-blue or silvery-blue arching foliage.
- Size: Forms dense, mounding clumps reaching 2 to 3 feet tall (including flower spikes) and 1.5 to 2.5 feet wide.
- Appearance: Features narrow, stiff, linear leaves with oat-like, blue-brown seed panicles that emerge in late spring to summer and fade to tan by autumn.
- Hardiness: Generally thrives in USDA Zones 4 through 9, staying evergreen in mild climates and semi-evergreen in colder regions.
Growing Requirements
- Sunlight: Requires full sun for the best vibrant blue color; tolerates very light partial shade.
- Soil: Needs well-drained, average to low-fertility soil. It is intolerant of heavy, wet soils and poor drainage, which can lead to crown rot.
- Water: Low water needs once established; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Care & Maintenance
- Pruning: Cut back old, faded foliage to about 3 to 4 inches in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
- Pests: Generally deer resistant and trouble-free if kept in properly drained soil.
