The Cutleaf Weeping Birch (Betula pendula 'Dalecarlica' or 'Laciniata') is a graceful, slender deciduous tree known for its pendulous weeping branches and deeply cut, fern-like leaves.
- Size: Grows to approximately 30 to 40 feet tall with a spread of 20 to 30 feet.
- Bark: Features showy, silvery-white peeling bark with dark markings on older wood.
- Foliage: Deeply serrated, dark green leaves that turn a brilliant golden-yellow in the autumn.
- Hardiness: Very cold-hardy, typically thriving in USDA Zones 2 through 7.
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
- Soil & Water: Requires consistently moist, well-drained soil; the root zone should not be allowed to dry out completely.
- Mulching: Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base to keep roots cool and retain moisture, avoiding "volcano mulching" against the trunk.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed; if necessary, prune only in summer after the leaves have fully developed to prevent heavy sap bleeding.
- Pests: Watch out for stresses that attract pests like the bronze birch borer.
