The Arctic Fire® Red Dogwood is a compact, dwarf variety of the native red-twig dogwood (Cornus sericea, formerly Cornus stolonifera) famous for its striking, fiery red stems that stand out brilliantly in winter landscapes.
Size: Grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, making it much more manageable than traditional 8-to-10-foot dogwood varieties.
Flowers & Fruit: Produces small, flat-topped clusters of white flowers in spring, which turn into decorative white berries by late summer that attract birds and wildlife.
Foliage: Dark green leaves through the summer that transform into a rich burgundy-red color in the fall.
Hardiness: Thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 3–8 (some sources list Zone 2) and tolerates cold well.
Light: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun gives the best stem color, flower production, and fall foliage.
Soil: Prefers rich, consistently moist soil, but shows great tolerance for heavy clay, wet sites, rain gardens, and boggy areas once established.
Wildlife Resistance: Highly resistant to deer and rabbits.
Best Color: The brightest red color appears on new stems (1- to 2-year-old growth). Older stems turn a dull, corky brown.
Pruning Method: Prune in early spring before new growth starts. Cut the entire plant back to short stubs every other year, or remove about one-third of the oldest stems annually to keep the color vibrant. Avoid shearing flat across the top, which can cause dead wood in the center.
