Salvia nemorosa 'Noble Knight' (commonly known as Noble Knight Meadow Sage) is a compact, exceptionally hardy perennial prized for its extra-large, fluffy flower spikes and robust landscape performance. Introduced as a standout variety by growers like Monrovia and Dümmen Orange, it is known for blooming earlier than many other meadow sages.
  • Appearance: It produces dense, vibrant purple-blue to indigo-purple flower spikes held on dramatic dark stems. The foliage consists of fragrant, textured gray-green leaves that form a tidy, tight mound.
  • Size: This is a truly dwarf variety, maturing at just 8 to 10 inches tall and spreading about 10 to 15 inches wide. Its short stature means it stays neatly upright and will not flop over.
  • Bloom Time: It flowers profusely from late spring all the way into early fall. It features a "self-cleaning" habit, meaning the blooms maintain a crisp, tidy look as they age.
    • Light: Requires full sun (at least 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily) to achieve its sturdiest stems and darkest flower coloration.
    • Soil: Thrives in average, well-drained soils. It is quite adaptable and can handle sandy, gravelly, or even clay soils as long as standing water isn't an issue.
    • Watering: Needs regular watering during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and prefers the soil to dry out between waterings.
    • Hardiness: Remarkably tough, it is winter hardy across USDA Zones 3 through 9. It behaves as an herbaceous perennial, dying back to the ground in winter and emerging fresh each spring.
    • Maintenance: Clip off spent flower spikes down to the foliage line to encourage continuous waves of new blooms. Give it a light application of all-purpose fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins.

      • Wildlife Magnet: The tubular flowers are highly attractive to honeybees, native pollinators, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
      • Pest Resistance: Thanks to the aromatic oils in its sage foliage, it is naturally deer-resistant and rabbit-resistant.
      • Versatility: Because of its petite frame, 'Noble Knight' is a perfect choice for the front of sunny garden borders, path edging, rock gardens, and patio containers. It looks best when planted in groupings of 3, 5, or 7 plants to create a striking mass of rich purple color.
