The ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) is a large, hardy evergreen conifer native to the mountainous and plateau regions of western North America.
- Size: Reaches heights of 60 to 125 feet (and up to 200+ feet in the wild) with a spread of 25 to 30 feet.
- Needles & Cones: Dark yellowish-green needles grow in bundles of three (or two, depending on the variety) and measure 5 to 10 inches long. It produces prickly, oval cones that are 3 to 6 inches long.
- Bark: Young trees have dark brown-to-black bark, which transitions on mature trees into striking cinnamon-brown or orange-yellow scaly plates that smell faintly of vanilla or butterscotch.
- Lifespan: These long-lived trees often survive for hundreds of years.
Care and Growing Requirements
- Sunlight: Thrives best in full sun and requires at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining sandy loam, gravel, or rocky soils, though it adapts well to poor soils as long as they are not waterlogged.
- Watering: Young trees need regular, deep watering during their first one to two years to establish their deep taproot. Mature trees develop exceptional drought tolerance.
- Hardiness: Generally cold-hardy across USDA Zones 3 through 7
