The Newport flowering plum (Prunus cerasifera 'Newport') is a hardy, small ornamental tree valued for its rich purple foliage and early spring blooms.
Size: Grows 15 to 20 feet tall and wide with a rounded canopy.
Flowers: Fragrant, pale pink to white blossoms appear in early spring before the leaves.
Foliage: Leaves emerge bronze-purple in spring, darken to rich purple through summer, and can show red tones in fall.
Fruit: Produces small, edible, dull purple fruits (about 1 inch across) in summer that attract local wildlife and birds.
Hardiness: Thrives in USDA Zones 4 through 8 (adaptable and cold-hardy).
Sunlight: Prefers full sun for the best leaf color and flower production.
Soil: Adapts to most average, well-draining soils.
Maintenance: Low-maintenance; prune lightly after the spring flowering period if needed to shape.
