Columnar Glossy Buckthorn #5 Shrub

Columnar glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus 'Columnaris', formerly Rhamnus frangula 'Columnaris'), often sold under the trade name Tallhedge, is a popular deciduous shrub prized for its narrow, upright growth habit. Reaching heights of 8 to 15 feet while staying only 3 to 4 feet wide, it serves as an excellent space-saving solution for privacy screens, narrow hedges, and vertical landscape accents.

• Foliage: Dense, oval, glossy dark green leaves that maintain their clean color deep into the autumn season before shifting to an attractive yellow or gold.
• Flowers & Fruit: Clusters of tiny, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers arrive in late spring. These develop into round berries that cycle from green to red, eventually maturing into a deep purplish-black by late summer.
• Structure: Naturally fastigiate and tight. It achieves a formal, uniform look without requiring heavy structural pruning. Unlike common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), the branches are entirely thornless.
• Hardiness: Extremely cold-tolerant, thriving across USDA Zones 2 to 7 and managing elevations up to 8,000 feet.
• Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun ensures the densest foliage growth and optimal column shape.
• Soil & Water: Highly adaptable to diverse soil types, though it prefers well-drained conditions. It requires moderate moisture to establish, after which it can tolerate occasional dry periods.
