  • Appearance: Features thick, uniform branching with short, stiff needles that emerge bright green and mature into a rich blue-green or sea-green tone.
  • Size & Growth: It is a slow-growing tree, adding about 3 to 6 inches of vertical growth per year. At full maturity, it typically reaches 20 to 40 feet tall (sometimes up to 60 feet in ideal conditions) with a spread of 10 to 15 feet.
  • Hardiness: Exceptionally cold-resistant, thriving in USDA Hardiness Zones 2–6. It can tolerate harsh winter winds, heavy ice, and temperatures down to -50°F.
  • Resilience: Compared to other spruces, it has excellent resistance against bad weather and moderate drought once established. It is also moderately deer-resistant and less susceptible to certain fungal blights than the Colorado blue spruce.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily), though it can tolerate light or partial shade.
  • Soil & Moisture: It adapts to a wide variety of soils—including acidic, alkaline, sandy, or clay soils—as long as the area is well-draining. It dislikes sitting in standing water or soggy conditions.
  • Spacing: If you are planting them individually, space them 15 to 20 feet apart. For a tight privacy fence or windbreak, you can reduce the spacing to 10 to 12 feet apart.
A highly desirable, naturally symmetrical cone-shape with a denser, more compact habit than the white spruce, making it very resistant to winter injury. New bright green foliage matures to blue-green. Provides winter cover, nesting sites and forage for wildlife. Fantastic as a landscape accent, or in groupings as a windbreak or screen. Evergreen.
