The Bigtooth Maple (Acer grandidentatum), also known as the canyon maple or western sugar maple, is a tough, slow-growing deciduous tree or large shrub native to the interior western North America and parts of Texas and Mexico.
- Size: Typically grows 15 to 40 feet tall (rarely up to 50 feet) with a spread of 10 to 20 feet, often forming a multi-stemmed structure depending on moisture.
- Leaves: Simple, opposite, and palmately 3- to 5-lobed with rounded teeth (hence "bigtooth"), featuring dark green surfaces and fuzzy undersides.
- Fall Color: Highly prized for its brilliant, fiery autumn foliage displaying intense shades of orange, red, yellow, and gold.
- Bark: Dark brown and scaly or furrowed with age.
- Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 4 through 8 (withstands temperatures down to -30°F or lower).
- Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
- Soil: Highly adaptable to well-drained rocky, clay, loam, and notably alkaline or calcareous/limestone-based soils.
- Water: Low to medium water needs once established; drought-tolerant but appreciates adequate drainage.
- Landscaping: Serves as an exceptional ornamental or small-yard shade tree due to its heat tolerance, urban pollution resistance, and vibrant fall display.
- Sap: Yields a sweet sap that can be used locally to produce maple sugar or syrup, though in smaller commercial quantities compared to the eastern sugar maple.
