The Arnold Sentinel Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra 'Arnold Sentinel') is a narrow, columnar evergreen tree introduced by the Arnold Arboretum.
- Size: Grows to about 20 to 25 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide at maturity, making it ideal for tight spaces where traditional pines are too wide.
- Foliage: Dense, dark-green, stiff needles in bundles of two.
- Growth Habit: Strictly upright, fastigiate, and columnar with sharply ascending branches.
- Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 4 through 8 (some sources note down to Zone 3), surviving temperatures as low as -40°F.
- Sunlight: Requires full sun.
- Soil: Adapts to various well-draining soils (clay or sand), though it will not tolerate standing or soggy water.
- Tolerances: High resistance to drought, urban pollution, heavy snow loads, and salt spray (suitable for coastal gardens).
- Wildlife Resistance: Generally deer-resistant.
- Maintenance: Low maintenance; light pruning or candle-pinching in mid-spring can help maintain a tight, compact shape.
Common Landscape Uses
- Vertical accent or single-lawn specimen
- Narrow privacy screen or windbreak
- Framing entryways or planting near power lines due to its modest width
